How long have you worked at the Bike Gallery? Since 1998
What is the bike you ride the most? 24” BMX because it is faster than people think it should be so they are surprised when I blow by them, plus it’s fun.
Where did you learn your skills? Born with most of them, have always been able to understand most mechanisms by just studying them and continuously asking: 1. What does/should it do? 2. What stands in the way of functionality? What is the most efficient corrective action? At a very young age I just knew I always wanted to be a mechanic. After years as a mechanic I wanted to have a career so I became more serious about the business side of the bike business and thus became passionate about helping bike mechanics to also have careers.
What is your favorite tool to use? The EVT adjustable height repair stand. It allows my old back to stay straight regardless of frame size on bike I am working on, and, I invented it.
What do you do when not working on bikes? Family, of course, Inventing new tools etc, and teaching myself how to be a better machinist (machine shop in backyard)
How long have you worked at the Bike Gallery? I made my Bike Gallery debut in July of 2003. After 3 years as a mechanic at the downtown location I was able to become the service manager at the Beaverton location. After a 2 year stint in Beaverton I was able to return home.
What is the bike you ride the most? I ride my commuter bike daily, but it takes a lot of rides to and from work to equal one mountain bike ride, so I am not sure which of my bikes sees the most saddle time. I have a rainy day commuter bike and a sunny day commuter bike so that also splits the ride time. I'm going to go with my mountain bike. It may not get ridden the most, but it is the one that brings me the most joy. Playing in the woods is just plain fun.
Where did you learn your skills? Initially, all of my wrenching skills were self-taught or learned via on the job experience at a few different shops in Boston, MA and Durango, CO. After 7 or 8 years I attended Barnett's Bicycle Institute in Colorado Springs and became "certified" as a bicycle mechanic. In my 6 years at the Bike Gallery I have learned far more than in the previous 9. In my opinion, nothing can make up for experience.
What is your favorite tool to use? My favorite tool is my Ritchey Torqkey. A dedicated 4mm allen/torque wrench, pre-set to 5Nm: it keeps me from braking all those fancy carbon parts.
What do you do when not working on bikes? Play.
How long have you worked at the Bike Gallery? I started in April 1995.
What is the bike you ride the most? I have a Trek 7.5 FX that is set up as a cyclocross bike. It is not too fancy to lock up or commute on. It's like the friend you don't have to come up with clever things to say around, you just hang out.
Where did you learn your skills? Before my boss Brett Flemming started, I had skills, but they were haphazardly organized like a sidewalk used book sale. Now my skills follow the Dewey Decimal System.
What is your favorite tool to use? My Park PW-4 Pedal wrench. It's undefeated!
What do you do when not working on bikes? Long mountain bike rides, Cyclocross races, Camping with my wife and dogs.
How long have you worked at the Bike Gallery? I started working for the BG in Jan 2006.
What is the bike you ride the most? Right now I ride my SantaCruz Heckler most because it is the most fun and I can beat that bike up all day and when I 'm done I don't have to fix anything.
Where did you learn your skills? I worked as an aircraft mechanic full time for the Oregon Air National Guard for 9 years. When my passion for cycling grew, my federal job had to go.
What is your favorite tool to use? I would probably have to say my Shimano chain checker because it looks like a penguin.
What do you do when not working on bikes? I have three very active children so when I'm not at work my wife and I are usually at some sort of lesson or event. I also manage to get away to the martial arts studio twice a week if I'm lucky.
How long have you worked at the Bike Gallery? I started at the BG in late July of 2004
What is the bike you ride the most? I ride my 'cross bike most frequently, as it does a little bit of everything for me. Hard-tail freeride bike makes a close second, as it's really fun.
Where did you learn your skills? I've been learning my skillz continuously, mostly honed them here at the Gallery.
What is your favorite tool to use? A big heavy hammer, it's just so satisfying when that's the right tool.
What do you do when not working on bikes? When not working with filthy grease on my hands, I try to ride my bike as much as I can. Stock answer, I know but what can I say? I mostly ride in the dirt, but will enjoy a tour or something like that every once in a while.
